Chapter 16
Ross was a little surprised when Macleod told him to hold off on the interview with Tunnock. They had held him, he would ask for a brief no doubt and by then it would be the middle of the night. If Tunnock was the man they sought then they had him in custody, But if Hope was right then it would be a night with a killer on the loose and possibly eyeing up other targets.
His driver this time was a young constable, a blonde woman of maybe twenty-something. She was fresh and bright and had not long since come on shift. Occasionally she would glance at him and he found it a little disturbing. In fact, as the journey continued it was starting to bug him as she was doing it more and more.
âIs something wrong, Constable? Have I left my sandwich on the side of my mouth? Am I drooling? Have I suddenly acquired a lazy eye?â
The constable looked sheepish. âNo, sir.â
âThen whatâs up?â
âWell, itâs just that you were the Inspector in charge on the Isle of Lewis, werenât you, when that woman and her son went in? You kept a body afloat and saved the girl they had kidnapped.â
Macleod shook his head. âI didnât save the girl, Detective McGrath saved her, held the bag up in the water. She was the real hero.â
âI knew that girl, sir. Went to the same school as her.â
âNot difficult in Lewis. Or was it the same primary school as well?â
âYes sir, the same primary school. Knew her fairly well.â
âOkay,â said Macleod, âbut thereâs no need for the hero worship, we all do what we can. Be careful when we go in here as well. I know there are a lot of the boys about with us but some of these men donât like women, think you should know your place. Theyâd have you chained to the sink, dressed just for them.â Macleod saw the look on her face. âI didnât say it was right, just letting you know thatâs where they are coming from. Donât go all moral either, weâre not there to change the world, just to find a killer.â
âYes sir. Iâll stay professional.â
âIâve no doubt you will, Constable, but it must be hard, especially for a woman, to see women kept like this. I donât like it as a man.â
The car continued along the roads of the Black Isle and soon they had arrived at the Carltonsâ. The air was cold and crisp and Macleod looked at the snow around him as he made his way to the door. There was an officer on the door and Macleod asked him what had been going on.
âThe family have been inside all day, sir. The young woman that arrived as well. We have remained at the door as requested. Thereâs been activity out to the garage and they have been working in the field behind the house as well. But no oneâs come or gone from this front door.â The officer stepped aside as Macleod rapped the door.
